If you visiting North Wales to come cycling or just fancy exploring whilst you here, thats great as the North Wales region has become of late a hub spot for cycling. Since our fantastic performances by team Sky GB in the Tour de France the past 3 years, with Chris Froom becoming the Champion twice, the Uk cycling industry has enjoyed a boom of its own. There seems to be a complete reticence of cycling afoot right now and its fantastic to see so many cycling clubs getting more and more numbers to their weekly meets. We seem to see more cyclist on the roads on Anglesey now that we have done over the past decade maybe longer, its fantastic to see.
Dave Brailsford the team sky manager and head coach to the Olympic GB cycling team is from Llanberis, Snowdonia. He has had a massive amount to do with the push for more cycling in north Wales in general. The tour of Britain passes through Llanberis, Dave’s home town in Snowdonia on consecutive stages and attracts thousands of visitors to watch the worlds best rides compete on the Welsh asphalt.
North Wales has taken full advantage of this by engaging and promoting many cycle sportive events throughout the year, including “Tour de Mon” here on Anglesey. Aim high events has a fantastic calendar of years events for cycling and triathlon on the island, look here for more information.
Whether you are just out for a family ride around Anglesey with the kids, or if your after a Saturday or Sunday morning blast into Snowdonia there is something for all. many Local clubs have a get totter on Sundays and have a selection of group levels and distances to suit all levels. Groups are very social and most have cake and coffee half way on their routes across the island or beyond.
If your looking to get out and explore then you are in the right place! I can seeming quite easily get lost on the B roads around anglesey and find places I have never eve seem previously. its not uncommon for me to have to stop a postman to ask for directions, and thats with a OS map in my back pocket!. So if your after a spin and take in the scenery then you have SO much to do here. The beauty is with the island that you can pick a route based on the wind direction if you wish- fancy some hill climbs, easy- Want to just tour a past road, no bother. We must have racked up maybe 40 different routes here and we are not short of more in the bag.
If you’re totally new here id say the first port of call is get a good OS map of Anglesey and Snowdonia, a 1:25,000 is best. Next download Strava running and cycling App with your Smart phone- have a look at local cycling routes, distances, times and make a note of which suit your abilities and style. See links below for local cycling groups on the island.
There has been a fantastic initiative of late set up by Cybi bikes for bike hire and group guided tours. Bikes can be hired from 7 different spots across the Island. There even have a free breakdown service if your bike has flat tyre!
