Campfires, food and friends

Why not get out for a late season feed around an open fire with friends to pass the night away.. with the weather still holding strong and the easterly winds light and crisp a few friends and I took to a  beach well off the beaten track to make a nice fire and eat around our hearth. This time of year is amazing for star gazing on the island and what better way to do it other than around a fire. Arriving early is the key to allow plenty of time for wood prepperation. Typically we need enough wood for 4 hours or more, this can take an hour maybe two sometimes so leave plenty of room for yourself time wise when the nights draw in this time of year. I take two types of axes typically and a small wood saw for this preparation. I use Fiskars Axes one small hatchet and one medium weight right now and the Barco Laplander saw.  Once all the wood Is prepped, it was time for an explore on the foreshore. Many migratory birds and foul are around this time of year so bring some binoculars. Food we kept simple really, using cous cous and a stew. All you need bring is 1 litre of water each! For was  delicious around the fire and it was chased down with some warm, whiskey topped mince pies! What a way to end the day. Remember, take a spare head torch with you, check the tides and if your building the fire door sensibly away from any flameables, have a stone surround and put it out before you leave. Oh and leave nothing but your footsteps! Enjoy!!
